Martha & Mary Childcare
Martha and Mary is a non-profit organization based in Poulsbo, WA that has provided quality care for both seniors and children since 1891. In the spring of 2021, Martha & Mary embarked on moving their stand-alone Child Care Learning Center (CCLC) in Poulsbo to the lower floor of their senior living community. This would allow them to continue providing childcare services to their community with room for an extra 75 children.
RFM and Martha & Mary partnered to transform 29 skilled nursing patient units into 16 early learning and childcare classrooms. The challenge of converting existing space into a different use was compounded by existing structural conditions and plumbing constraints. Additionally, the team needed to consider not only the usage of staff and children, but also of the resident visitors that would be visiting for their Intergenerational Program. This unique activity allows elders to visit with Pre-K and Preschool students to enjoy each other’s company and learn from one another through weekly meet-ups and activities such as arts and crafts, games, and music.
The RFM design team developed a plan in close coordination with the CCLC director and Martha & Mary Chief Operations Officer to ensure that the new center would enhance the facility’s program offerings. Calming blues and greens with natural wood tones were used to provide a soothing environment for their children. New spaces such as a library, indoor gym, and a quiet reading nook allow an enhanced experience for children to learn and grow. These “third spaces” also allow for greater accessibility for senior visitors.
