Cowlitz 911
The exterior and interior design of this 13,000 sf emergency response facility incorporates elements of nature and biophilia to support and enhance the work and well-being of 911 dispatchers who face the stress and vicarious trauma of responding to emergency calls during long, sometimes overnight, shifts.
The central corridor running in the east-west direction includes clerestory windows that allow natural light to fill the interior. The public entry reception and lobby provide views for staff to easily see visitors approaching the building. Boulders integrated into the landscape create visual deterrents around the public entry for unauthorized vehicular approach.
The architectural form is straightforward and efficient, reminiscent of familiar agrarian structures. Exterior materials are durable and minimal, yet thoughtfully integrated and reflect patterns of nature. The orientation maximizes the daylight and takes advantage of wooded view opportunities.
