Virginia Mason Bainbridge clinic opening in June

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — Doctors tended to generations of islanders at Virginia Mason‘s Winslow Way clinic.

The Seattle medical group’s new 30,000-square-foot health center on High School Road is designed with the space and flexibility to serve generations to come, said Dr. Catherine Edwards, who heads primary care at the clinic.

The expanded Virginia Mason Bainbridge Island Medical Center at 1344 Wintergreen Lane off High School Road opens June 11. The 380 Winslow Way East clinic, which opened in 1945 and was operated by Virginia Mason for the past 25 years, will close for good on June 8, in preparation for the move.

“There is a lot of history here,” Edwards said, “and we’re looking forward to this next chapter.”

Residents can get an early look at the Wintergreen Lane center during an open house from 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett will make an appearance from 1:45-3:15 p.m.

Attendees will be introduced to a modern, two-story medical center with a broad, glass-fronted lobby. Edwards said the interior layout, created by Rice Fergus Miller of Bremerton, was designed to provide an inviting and comforting environment for patients as they move through the building. The 31 exam rooms, for example, have separate entrances for staff and patients, keeping back-of-the-house operations removed from the patient experience.

“To keep a sense of healing away from the hubbub,” Edwards explained.

Abundant natural light and nature-themed art and signage add to the calm.

More than double the size of the Winslow Way clinic, the new medical center gives Virginia Mason space to add providers and expand the services it already provides on the island. New services include physical therapy, nutrition counseling, and neuro surgery consultation.

Flexible rooms will allow for shared medical appointments, where patients with similar conditions can meet with providers in a group setting. An imaging center will offer digital X-rays, 3-dimensional mammography, MRI and CT imaging.
