Timber Ridge at Talus in Issaquah was a runner-up in the continuing care retirement community category of the 2017 Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards.
Sun City Tower Kobe, a 33-story luxury residential tower for seniors in Kobe, Japan, designed by BAR Architects, won in that category.
There were more than 80 submittals to the program, which recognizes projects that improve the lives of seniors. For all the winners, go to http://tiny.cc/b9cppy.
Timber Ridge was developed by Life Care Services of Des Moines, Iowa. It was completed in two phases, in 2008 and 2016, according to a press release from the architect, Rice Fergus Miller of Bremerton.
It has 329 residential apartments, 45 skilled nursing apartments, and 26 assisted living and memory care apartments, and is nearly 90 percent occupied.
RFM said Timber Ridge used green construction strategies and is the first senior living community in the U.S. to be awarded LEED silver, for phase one.
It said the nine-acre site plan responds to environmental cues of the east-facing site; the building slightly twists to the east to open all areas to sun and views. The wings spread to capture views and avoid looking into each other. Several courtyards connect to the Talus trail system.
The team also includes GLY Construction (phase one) and The Weitz Co. (phase two), general contractors; StudioSIX5, interiors; Berger Partnership, landscape architecture; Coughlin Porter Lundeen, structural and civil engineering; and McKinstry, Stirrett Johnsen and Valley Electric Co., design/builders.
