Rice Fergus Miller Awarded Best In User Centered Design For Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe Healing Clinic

BREMERTON, Wash. — Rice Fergus Miller won the 2022 User Centered Design Award for their design of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe Healing Clinic. The award, bestowed by the Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo, is dedicated to honoring projects that “best reflects and balances the requirements of patients, their family, and practitioners,” according to the award’s website.
The clinic, located in Washington’s North Olympic Peninsula, opened its doors in the Spring of 2022 as a healing center for tribe and non-tribe members who are experiencing substance use disorder. Everything about the clinic’s design, from the surrounding landscape and reflecting pool, to the artwork and referential storytelling, reflects the culture and aesthetic of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.
As one of only a few clinics nationally that pairs medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with wraparound services such as primary care, dental care, counseling, social services, and child care, the center is notable for its contemporary, holistic approach to addiction treatment.
“They’ve got patients whose lives have been about being dismissed, about being judged, basically being told how bad they are. And then they come for treatment in the most beautiful building, the most beautiful landscape setting in the North Peninsula they’ve ever set foot in, and it’s all built for them to heal,” said Greg Belding, Principal with RFM. “To be part of that is really powerful.”
The Symposium Distinction Awards, hosted by the Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo, are designed to highlight the people and projects elevating the field of healthcare design.
